Places To Visit In Mumbai - Gateway Of India

Gateway of India

During British rule this grand gateway was built at Mumbai's Apollo Bander to commomerate the visit to India of England's King George V and Queen Mary. Its conceptualizing, drawings and planning was done by the well known Architect George Wittet. The royal couple came in 1911, the work started in 1913 and was completed in 1927 at a cost of Rs. 21 lakhs.

For construction of gateway of India, land was reclaimed from sea by filling rocks and earth. The foundation was taken 32 feet deep. This monument is unique amalgam of Indian - Islamic architectural styles, its central dome is 83 feet high and has a diameter of 48 feet. One can see floating crafts and large ships in the Arabian sea for considerable distance. If one turns around, can see the Tajmahal Hotel. After independence, large statues of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj& Swami Vivekanand have been erected near the gateway. There are regular ferries for Elephanta caves, Alibaug and nearby villages from here.
